There were multiple spinoffs dedicated to just showing off these characters in a softcore porn esque manner, including the bonus shitstorm of Dead or Alive Xtreme 3.

Jiggle Physics were an advertised feature, especially in America, and it was often the first thing brought up when the series was mentioned, more than the fighting game system or the story. Sex is to DOA the way that violence and gore are to Mortal Kombat: Central to the brand, a bit silly, and baked in to the point where trying to remove it would fundamentally harm the series identity. I want to emphasize how important sex appeal is to DOA.

The mostly female cast's assets were allowed to flop around in the wind, free of any form of logical support that you'd find in any sort of combat sport. This allowed the game, compared to it's competition, to really ratchet up the sexual elements of both it's characters and it's world. Its actually quite the marvel of programming and animation, especially back in the early 2000s. Or, as it's more well known as, jiggle physics. That's not why most people know it though.ĭead or Alive is most famous for it's physics engine, which allows for the manipulation and dynamic movement of individual body parts in response to in game hits an actions. It's a fun, easy to pick up but difficult to master series, the best kind to put on when your friend comes over and Mom bought Pizza Bagels. It also has an entire counter attack system of holds, part of an overall triangle of attacks that form the core gameplay loop. Gameplay wise, DOA is fast, with characters moving a lot quicker and able to throw out more moves compared to it's contemporaries of Tekken and Soul Calibur. It rose to prominence during the late 90s and mid 2000s, the "dark age" of fighting games, and arguably was one of the most popular franchises in the entire genre for a brief period of time. Dead or Alive, or DOA, is a series of 3d fighting games debuting in 1996 and continuing to, possibly, this day.
